An eight-month-old child who was reportedly taken by an unknown woman at the Kpando Market has been reunited with the family after a three-day ordeal, bringing relief to relatives, traditional authorities, and members of the public who closely followed the incident.

The suspected woman is currently in police custody as investigations continue, while the rescued child has been taken to a health facility for medical examinations to ascertain the child's condition after the incident.

How the Incident Happened

Speaking exclusively to Akpini News & Tours, the child's mother, Agbo Mansa, recounted the circumstances that led to the disappearance of her baby.

According to her, on Thursday, 16 July, she travelled to the Kpando Market to sell groundnuts, one of the food items she trades in.

She explained that an unknown woman approached her intending to purchase four "rubbers" (local measuring units) of groundnuts. After informing the customer that each unit cost GH¢25, the woman requested that the transaction be completed at Nkunya Station within the market area.

Agbo Masa said she followed the customer with her eight-month-old child strapped to her back. While measuring the groundnuts, she had to bend repeatedly, causing the baby to become uncomfortable and cry.

According to her account, the customer then offered to hold the child temporarily to allow her to continue serving the order.

However, after measuring three of the four requested units, Agbo Mansa realised she did not have enough groundnuts to complete the order. She informed the customer that she would quickly collect additional stock from her sister nearby and briefly left the child in the woman's care.

"When I returned, both the woman and my baby were nowhere to be found," she recounted.

The only items left behind were the three measured units of groundnuts.

Search Begins Immediately

The distressed mother said she immediately began searching throughout the market before reporting the incident through the market's information centre.

Announcements were subsequently made to alert traders and residents, while local media outlets also assisted in publicising the missing child.

The case was later reported to the Ghana Police Service, which commenced investigations.

According to her, the family initially struggled to understand how such an incident could occur, particularly since the mother had never met the woman before.
